[Infographic]: Understanding Product Design Roles

Product design is an umbrella term that encompasses many different roles across the design spectrum, including user experience (UX) design and user interface (UI) design. It’s important to note that there is a difference between user interface (UI) design and user experience (UX) design as they are often mistakenly used interchangeably. UX design focuses on the journey and interactions through/with the product, whereas UI design focuses on the visuals of a product.

The below infographic summarizes the main functional interaction questions product designers ask themselves when evaluating a product.

However, truly excellent product design goes beyond this list and focuses on the "delight" factor, too. Designers should also be asking themselves if a product delivers elements of joy, meaning will the user spend more time on a site or an app simply because it's fun to use.
